Battling Self

Updated: May 12

Do you ever suffer from self-doubt? Thinking that perhaps you aren’t equipped, or knowledgeable enough to accomplish something?

Are there times when you think you are heading in the direction God is leading, but then stop and wonder – is this really what I’m supposed to be doing?

I have – and especially lately. This whole move-to-Florida-thing has turned my world upside down. When you live in your hometown your entire life, you know what to expect (for the most part). You recognize those familiar faces, you know your way around town, where to find the best produce, and even what plants will grow well in your back yard.

I’ve had a lot of ups and downs since moving. There have been times of extreme loneliness, times of doubt, and wondering where God is leading me. And just when I think I’ve got it figured out and start working on a plan, then I start doubting again. It’s an awful cycle to be in.

Lately, on several occasions in our small group time in Bible Study, we have discussed why someone in scripture acted in the manner they did. And it seems to be that it was largely due to their fear. One of the ladies began to share a personal story about the very thing, and expressed how her fear immobilized her. Self-doubt is fear. It alters your steps and freezes you into inaction.

BUT, the scriptures are clear: we’re not to be afraid.

“So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.”  (Isaiah 41:10)

“Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.”  (Joshua 1:9)

Look at the language God uses: “I commanded you.” And get this: the wording doesn’t change in different versions of scripture. The word “command” (or variant of) is used consistently. We’re commanded to be strong and courageous. We’re called to TRUST God in everything – not to be fearful.

Friends, I want to encourage you to join me in overcoming any self-doubt you may be currently experiencing. Has God been working in your life, and you’ve questioned the direction He’s taking you? Don’t let the enemy creep in and change your direction. Pray about whatever it is. Seek out God’s Word and let it speak to your heart. Confide in a Christian friend who will pray for you and will come alongside you.

Let us not be held back by our self-doubt any longer.
